The Mission of the P.S. 174 School Library is to serve the students, staff, and parents of our school community in the following ways:

• Fostering a love of reading and literature

• Offering a collection of materials which supports the curricula

• Providing students with the skills to search for information efficiently

Information Fluency Standard #2 Pursuing Personal and Aesthetic Growth We will strive toward these benchmarks as we explore a POETRY UNIT.

Grade K: Recognizes the works of a single author.

Grade 1: Selects books, poems, or media based on teacher-selected criteria or personal preference.

Grade 2: Begins to recognize that different genres require different reading strategies.

Grade 3: Begins to explore and examine the various genres based on personal interests.

Grade 4: Recognizes features of various genres and uses different reading strategies for understanding.

Grade 5: Understands literal meanings and can identify the main points and supporting details.
