The Mission of the P.S. 174 School Library is to serve the students, staff, and parents of our school community in the following ways:

• Fostering a love of reading and literature

• Offering a collection of materials which supports the curricula

• Providing students with the skills to search for information efficiently

• Encouraging independent learning and critical thinking

• Developing lifelong learners

Library Hotspot Loan Program

The ConnectED Library Hotspot Loan Program is a collaborative program by New York Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library, Queens Public Library, and the New York City Department of Education to provide thousands of NYC K-12 students with free Internet access for the entire school year. Information Fluency Standard #1 : “I am a thinker.” Using Inquiry to build understanding and create new knowledge. I

Grades K-2: Recognizes that nonfiction resources in the library are organized by categories and begins to associate the Dewey numbers with areas of interest.

Grades 3-5: Locates nonfiction materials at appropriate reading level.

Information Fluency Standard #2: “I am an explorer.” Pursuing Personal and Aesthetic Growth Grades

K-2: Compares illustrations by the same illustrator across different stories.

Grades 3-5: Examines writing style of same author in two different works.

Information Fluency Standard #3 “I am a citizen.” Demonstrating Social Responsibility

Grades K-2: Respects the ideas of others by listening and raising hands before speaking.

Grades 3-5: Recognizes the right to express own opinion in an appropriate manner, even when the opinion differs from the ideas of others.
