The Mission of the P.S. 174 School Library is to serve the students, staff, and parents of our school community in the following ways:

• Fostering a love of reading and literature

• Offering a collection of materials which supports the curricula

• Providing students with the skills to search for information efficiently

• Encouraging independent learning and critical thinking

• Developing lifelong learners

(Goals are based on the Empire State Information Fluency Continuum as they are aligned to the New York State Common Core Learning Standards for Literacy)

Information Fluency Standard #1 : “I am a thinker.” Using Inquiry to build understanding and create new knowledge.

Grade K: Identifies the overall “big picture” idea by stating it orally or drawing a picture.

Grades 1-2: Demonstrates the ability to use the library and check out books.

Grades 3-5: Recognizes the organization and use of important areas of the library media center.

Information Fluency Standard #2: “I am an explorer.” Pursuing Personal and Aesthetic Growth

Grades K-2: Makes connections between literature and own experiences.

Grades 3-5: Selects books from favorite authors and genres; tries new genres an formats when suggested.

Information Fluency Standard #3 “I am a citizen.” Demonstrating Social Responsibility

Grades K-2: Demonstrates responsibility and awareness that library resources are to be shared among the entire school community.

Grades 3-5: Maintains respectful use of information resources both in own library and in other institutions.
