The Mission of the P.S. 174 School Library is to serve the students, staff, and parents of our school community in the following ways:

• Fostering a love of reading and literature

• Offering a collection of materials which supports the curricula

• Providing students with the skills to search for information efficiently

• Encouraging independent learning and critical thinking

• Developing lifelong learners

Library Hotspot Loan Program

The ConnectED Library Hotspot Loan Program is a collaborative program by New York Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library, Queens Public Library, and the New York City Department of Education to provide thousands of NYC K-12 students with free Internet access for the entire school year. Information Fluency Standard #1 : “I am a thinker.” Using Inquiry to build understanding and create new knowledge.

Grades K-2: “Uses simple note-taking strategies as demonstrated by librarian/teacher.”

Grades 3-5: “Uses various note-taking strategies (e.g. outlining underlining, bulleted lists, highlighting, graphic organizers).”

Information Fluency Standard #2: “I am an explorer.” Pursuing Personal and Aesthetic Growth

Grades K-2: “Recognizes the work of a single author.” (Dr. Seuss)

Grades 3-5: “Selects appropriate print and electronic materials on an individual level.”

Information Fluency Standard #3 “I am a citizen.” Demonstrating Social Responsibility

Grades K-2: “Understands that it is wrong to copy from an author or another student.”

Grades 3-5: “Understands the basic concept of plagiarism as copying the work of others.”
