In order to be prepared for 4th grade, we have assigned the following book:

The Summer of the Swans, by Betsy Byars (Author of many other books, including The Cybil War)

The longest day in the life of a 14-year-old girl--the summer day her brother is lost, the day she discovers compassion is a friend. How would you feel if you lost someone or something precious?

Read The Summer of the Swans to find out what happens to Sara and her brother.

Come to school prepared to discuss this book on the first day of school! Read The Summer of the Swans!

Required Summer Reading Get ready for third grade by reading…

My Father’s Dragon Written by Ruth Stiles Gannett

When Elmer Elevator hears about the plight of an overworked and under-appreciated flying baby dragon, he packs his knapsack with supplies and stows away on a ship headed for Wild Island. Nothing will stop Elmer from rescuing the dragon!

Read My Father’s Dragon to find out if Elmer rescues the dragon. Come to school on September 4th ready to discuss this book!

Required Summer Reading for 3-204

Welcome to class 3-204!

I can’t wait to meet you all and start a brand new year!  This summer you will be required to read three books that I know you will love. The first book is a Magic Tree House book.  The main characters travel back to ancient Rome right before a volcano erupts.  The second book is a classic, Winnie the Pooh.  This book is required reading for all GATE students.  Lastly (my favorite book) Molly Maxwell Doesn’t Love Stuart Little.   This is a story about a girl who has a required summer book just like you!  I hope you enjoy these books!  OH!  One more thing…

Molly Maxwell Doesn’t Love Stuart Little Activities Story Summary Sheet Please fill in the story summary sheet for Molly Maxwell.   Remember to look at the attached rubric, so you can see how this assignment will be graded. Create An Award!
 
Choose one character from the book and based on their actions in the novel create an award certificate.  One might be awarded “most courageous” for standing up to a bully or he/she might be awarded “wisest” for the advice he/she gave other characters.  After you have created your award on a separate piece of paper write a paragraph that explains why this character deserves this award.
