Grade Unit/Focus Student Goals

Students will learn about:

• Impressionist artist Claude Monet

• Learn about organic shapes by drawing and tracing water lilies and pads to create a water lily collage

• Enhance their cutting and pasting skills in this project

• Symmetry in nature as they create beautiful butterflies

Students will:

• About artist Claude Monet and the art movement IMPRESSIONISM

• To identify some of his most famous works and create a magical garden inspired by his work

• About PERSPECTIVE, so that they can create a HORIZON LINE separating the ground from the sky and a pathway going back into space

• About MIXED-MEDIA and TEXTURE, so that they can use CHALK PASTEL and TEMPERA paint to color their artwork

Students will learn to:

• About a HORIZON LINE, so that they can create a windmill landscape using basic one point perspective (with a clear difference between land and sky)

• About VALUE, so that they can add shadows with black chalk pastel to make the windmills appear to be 3D

• About MIXED-MEDIA, so that they can create an Impressionist landscape collage using paint, paper, oil pastel, glue, and chalk pastel.

Students will understand that:

• About COLOR and VALUE so that they can determine COLOR FAMILIES and create tints of at least two colors

• Learn about FORM, so that they can use VALUE to make their work appear 3D

Students will:

• To explore space in the scientific sense along with space as an element of art

• Learn how to make the most out of the space of the paper to create an interesting composition of overlapping objects and the illusion of depth and movement

• Combine the use of pastels (oil and chalk) with splatter painting and drawing to create fun and expressive art

Students will:

• Learn about American artist JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT, so that they can create an EXPRESSIVE portrait inspired by his work
