The purpose of this workshop is to teach parents how to support your child’s social studies curriculum at home. It will cover ideas and offer easy to implement strategies as to how to help students understand unsettling topics and how to answer their difficult questions.
· Why is Social Studies Important?
The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.
· Learning about Unsettling Content (e.g., Slavery, Civil War, Native Americans )
o A brief look at some of the curriculum units
· Helping Your Child Understand Challenging Topics
o How to talk to your child about Slavery
o Tools to use at home (touch objects, picture books, suggested websites)
· Culturally Responsive Classroom, setting up a social contract in the classroom
o A student-centered approach to teaching in which the students' unique cultural strengths are identified and nurtured to promote student achievement and a sense of well-being about the student's cultural place in the world.
